Connection help
Connect Betterment to Silvia
Follow these steps to find your Betterment account in Silvia, authorize a connection, and resolve common setup issues.
Before You Start
Have your Betterment login and access to your usual verification method ready. Check that you can sign in directly with your institution before starting.
- Betterment requires a separate App Password for connections to other apps. Sign in to Betterment in a browser and open Settings, then Security.
- In App Passwords, choose Generate a new App Password and identify the app you are connecting. Copy the generated password when it appears; Betterment only displays it once.
- When the connection window requests your Betterment credentials, use that App Password in the password field. Keep your regular Betterment login for signing in directly to Betterment.
Connect Your Account
Open Your Portfolio in Silvia
Sign in and open Assets & Liabilities (or My Portfolio). Select Banks & Brokerages under Add an Asset. If your page has an Add button, choose Add asset first. On mobile, the + button opens the add options.
Find the Right Betterment Listing
Search for Betterment in the Add Account window. Choose the listing that matches your institution and account type. Banking, credit card, brokerage, and workplace accounts may use different listings.
Follow the Connection Prompts
Silvia opens the connection provider for the listing you selected. Follow the sign-in instructions and complete any verification requested by Betterment. You may be redirected to your institution to authorize access.
Review Access & Select Your Accounts
Review the requested data access, select the accounts you want to share when prompted, and complete the authorization. Available accounts and data depend on your institution and connection provider.
Return to Silvia
Finish the connection flow and return to your portfolio. Allow time for the initial sync, then check that your selected accounts appear. Balances, holdings, and transactions may arrive at different times where available.
If You Have Trouble Connecting
- If your usual Betterment password is rejected by the connection window, check that you are using the App Password created for this connection.
- An App Password cannot be used to sign in to Betterment’s own website. If direct access fails, use Betterment’s normal login recovery before managing your App Passwords.
Ready to Connect?
Open your portfolio, then follow the steps above to search for Betterment. You may be asked to sign in first.
